Through its physicians and highly skilled oncology clinical staff, Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers offers care for patients battling all types of cancers. Medical oncology is a service provided by a team that consists of medical oncologists and oncology nurses. This team works with cancer patients to ensure that they are receiving the best treatment plan for their particular situation. Throughout each patient's cancer treatment, this team closely monitors the patient's progress and provides education to each patient about various forms of cancer and the temporary side effects of cancer treatment through chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy, the treatment of cancer with special drugs, is used to keep cancer from spreading, to slow a cancer's growth and to relieve the symptoms that are caused by cancer. Chemotherapy drugs are designed to destroy or change cancer cells to bring the disease under control. Each drug affects cancer cells in a different way. Some drugs actually break down parts of the cells, some disrupt the cell's growth cycle at particular stages and others deplete "food" needed by the cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs affect both normal and cancerous cells. Although both types of cells are damaged, normal cells have a greater ability to repair this damage and to continue living than do the cancerous cells.
Chemotherapy drugs are typically administered intravenously, orally or through an injection. The length of treatment depends on the type and severity of the cancer. Chemotherapy treatments are available at all of RMCC's locations throughout Colorado.

Radiation therapy is the use of high-energy x-rays or radioactive materials to kill cancer cells. The purpose of all diagnostic and radiation treatment is to detect and destroy the cancerous tumor while minimizing the adverse affects on nearby healthy organs and tissue. The treatment is odorless, invisible and painless. Radiation therapy incorporates various techniques, including external and internal radiation.
With access to cutting-edge radiation treatments, including PET/CT, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), radio camera, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy, Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers provides patients with the latest treatments available in the fight against cancer.
